I love this local authentic Greek restaurant! In my opinion, this is the best Greek food in Gaithersburg, and possibly east MoCo. The gyros are the best you can get. The pita is fresh, soft, buttery, and fragrant. The vegetables are fresh, and tomatoes perfect. The Tzatziki sauce is cool, crisp, and balanced with spice. And the meat. That meat! Hot, tender, juicy, and so much of it! The only problem you will have is eating it - it is huge - I dare you to eat it with out spilling contents out of it and making a mess of your face. The chicken souvlaki platter is a great lunchtime meal; plenty of food and the chicken is always fresh and fragrant. If you feel like something very hearty, I recommend their moussaka. Give it a try! Do NOT miss the dolmades. I would go just for these treats! Everything is baked fresh daily, by the same Greek family. Do not miss this place. Just don't go on Sunday, because they are closed. Enjoy!

The food here was just ok. I ordered the lamb souvlaki platter, which includes a heaping pile of salad, fries, and pita, and one small skewer of lamb kebab. The lamb kebab was actually pretty good, I just wish there was more of it and less of everything else (see photo). For dessert we got the peach pastry, which looks delicious but was kind of average (see photo). The reason for knocking this review down from 3 to 2 stars is the owner's attitude. My friends and I bought our meals, and sat and talked for a bit afterwards. At some point the owner comes out and asks us if we need anything else. Then he tells us he needs this table - very poor taste for any restaurant owner. Having this one table is worth losing customers? You can have it. 2 stars.

If I could rate lower than 1 star I would. A friend brought us Athen's Grill a few weeks ago and we loved it so I decided to stop in and pick up food tonight. Ugh that was a mistake! After feeling like the chicken texture was funny I cut into a piece and it was pink in the center. I continued to cut and my kabob was raw in the center. Not only is this gross but it's totally unacceptable. 3 people ate some of the chicken and I am praying no one gets sick. Called the restaurant and drove back 20 minutes. The owner was nice and refunded the kabobs but I wish he could have refunded it over the phone as I paid with a credit card and had to drive back the food they didn't cook. So we ate undercooked chicken, drove out of our way and now we are hoping we don't get salmonella. Not happy at all.

This place is within a shopping center, it isn't very big, so don't go with a large group. But it is definitely worth a trip if you enjoy big portions of delicious Greek food. The owner is a nice gentlemen, there are definitely regulars and he does remember them. When you come here, you order first, then you can carry it out or take the food to a table and sit. The biggest combination of tables is 4 chairs. This place isn't super great for a large crowd, but it s great for take out if you need more space. I went with my brother and one of his friends who lives down the street. I got the gyro sandwich, my brother got the gyro platter, and his friend got the chicken orzo. My sandwich was HUGE, where was no way I was going to be able to eat it in mouth bites without a fork. So I just started using a fork to it it all together. I didn't end up eating any of the pita, and I feel like I should have just gotten a salad, but that might have been a little too much. The lamb was cut in long strips, and tzatziki sauce covered the top of the lamb and lettuce. There was also this vinaigrette on the lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. It was a mouthgasm. The platter has the components of a gyro on a plate, but the pita is cut into quarters and placed on the side. It also comes with french fries too. It is a huge plate. The food here is really good. At the counter where you order, there are desserts in a glass case. They look amazing, I haven't had the pleasure of trying them but I definitely might the next time.

Great tasty Greek food coming from a little family-owned hole-in-the-wall restaurant. The portions are huge. The gyro platter easily feeds two people (you might need extra bread though). You can substitute rice for the fries. Ambience is casual & simple, and the service is fairly quick when it's not crowded. Closed on Sundays.

Not sure how Athens Grill got such high ratings, I was largely unimpressed. There are many other better choices out there for good Greek cuisine. The chicken souvlaki platter was a small portion, and lacking in flavor. The spanakopita was bland and just generally not good. Just simply a disappointment overall.

Had the shrimp and chicken platter. Everything was fresh and well seasoned! Would I go back? Without a doubt!

Dimitri is always friendly. Food is cooked fresh and delicious every time. A family favorite!

A little out dated when it comes to the decorations but the BEST FOOD! I have been here multiple times at different times of the day. Absolutely everything is AMAZING, the staff is always kind, the owner is one of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure of speaking with. When you are there the owner makes a point to try and get to know you (if you come in multiple times) and once your a regular he seems to know exactly what it is you want (observation). Not a fast-food joint and you can tell the difference in the freshly cooked food. Worth the trip every time.

This place was GREAT!! I would definitely come again. Tried it out because of the reviews that it had on it. And it lived up to the praise. Can't wait to go again!

We always enjoy ordering from Athens. The portions are huge and I can usually eat it for dinner then leftovers for lunch the next day. Our normal orders are the chicken kabobs, chicken souvlaki, and steak kabobs. Occasionally we will get a meal that is over-spiced and I end up scraping it off the outside but that doesn't stop us from craving it and ordering again. Athens is one of our favorite order out places.

Soggy lettuce in gyro Chicken was good; lamb was okay Charge extra for extra tzaiki sauce A bit pricey

Two and a half stars. I always regret cheating on Plaka Grill. Athens takes oily pita bread to a whole new level: supple and decadent while fresh, stiff and greasy as leftovers. Hummus and chicken avgolemono were just okay. Baklava was a skip for me: the abundance of honey weighed down the flaky pastry layers and there was no structural balance to the crushed pistachio layer. I'll give them one more chance with chicken livers, and maybe lamb chops or imam.

Best gyro in Moco. And portions are large. Call ahead before the dinner rush. It's gets Very busy.

This is the best Greek Food in Gaithersburg! I have been coming to Athens Grill for years and they are truly the best! I get the same thing all the time, Beef Souvlaki platter, extra salad, no fries (they are delicious, just trying to be good), Yum! All other dishes are just as great, i just love a good Greek salad! Deserts are homemade to perfection, the Baklava is outstanding! Service is great, they are family owned and are just the nicest people! Its addicting, trust me, you will find yourself craving Athens Grill, Love it!!

The salad is a little soggy but still yummy. I had the lamb platter and I would recommend it. Best for take out, the store is a bit small.

I have been eating at or taking out from Athens grille for 20 years. Consistently delicious. Best take out in the area. I like the gyros souvlaki and my husband usually gets the chicken souvlaki. Always excellent and perfectly cooked. I try to stay away from dessert but they are right in front and freshly made every day so I do indulge occasionally and they are as good as the food. Dominic, the owner is a pleasure.

  • Lucy E.

The hummus was really good along with the pita bread. I got the breast of chicken sandwich and was really good. I went with my husband and siblings (3 of them) and came to see that it was very pricey. It was 70 dollars with no drinks. It was ridiculous. Not worth 70 for sure though

This place is phenomenal. Absolute best Greek food. They have a fantastic in house salad dressing and all of their food is seasoned wonderfully.

I tried Athens Grill after reading all the good reviews and I was not disappointed. I had a Gyro and it was amazingly good!! Don't be turned off by the price (9.79) it was huge and delicious. Athens Grill, I will be back.

Have you ever noticed that sometimes a persons hands just look content? Every single time I have visited Athens Grill the owner has managed the register, filled the order, and offered cordial service with the patience and respect of someone who is content. I respect that. You know what kind of place this is from the moment you walk through the airlock doors. Nice spit cooking in the background, mom and pop patiently ordering the staff around, and a few people happily munching away at food. Yellowing articles from the local papers heralding the joint adorn the area around the register. And, finally, always being called my friend by the mild-mannered owner. The food is great, and I personally recommend the fish (if it is available) kebab. Nice, delicately cooked fish on a bed of rice with a delicious and greasy pita on the side. The only reason Athens does not receive the full five-star treatment is because of the typical Greek lack of vegetarian/pescatarian options. This is nothing against them, and if nothing else it shows the authenticity of the place.

This restaurant is hit and miss. Sometimes I would rate it with a 5, other times, I'd rate it with a 1. Their Hummus is the best I've had and it comes with warm wedges of Pita. The Rotisserie Chicken can be amazing, or completely dried up and shouldn't have been served to a customer. I've ordered their Chicken Youvetsi and it was totally drowned in oil. Inedible. That's the problem! Their quality control. If you plan to eat it there, you can return it to them and they will make it good. But if you bring it home and serve it to guests, it's humiliating. And who wants to have to go back to "exchange" your dinner, once you've sat down to eat? He should never sell anything he wouldn't want to eat himself... Too bad. When the food is good, it's GREAT!

  • Kevin S.

Best Gryo in Montgomery County. The gyros here are so full of flavor and they keep having me coming back for more. The Gryo salads are also very filling. The prices are fair and the ambiance is very simple. The owner works all the time and that's refreshing to see someone so in love with what he does. I recommend getting carryout.

  • TJ B.

This place is great. I have been coming here for 15 years and it is always good. The trick is an owner who takes pride in his food. You get excellently flavored food, large portions, and everything is made to order. You may wait a bit on a busy day, but it is worth it. The meat is tender, the fries are crisp, and your platter is loaded with plenty of greek salad heaping with feta cheese. Wow. I've mostly gotten the platters, but occasionally try the seafood and soups. All good. I agree that the gyro platter is very good. He gives you a LOT of meat and overall good quantities of everything. BUT, if you want to TRULY EXPERIENCE Athens Grille, GET THE ZORBA PLATTER!!! It's only a few bucks more than any other platter and it comes with everything. It is fantastic. Lots of food, tons of flavor. Today I went in after not being here for several months and, as always, wondered what's kept me away. One of the new items he has is a chicken and shrimp souvlaki platter. (pictured) It was just want I wanted...some of his marinated chicken along with a little seafood. As a bonus, it came with this warm dill lemon sauce (?) which was great. I don't know if that is standard on all seafood dishes, but I could have almost eaten it as a soup. Great stuff. I'll be back soon, Dimitri!

Best Greek restaurant in MoCo. Food is always fresh and portions are huge. Only downside is that they are closed on Sundays. Definitely prefer the food from this place to the other over priced Greek restaurants in the area.

  • Alberto R.

Do I really need to add anything more to the long history of excellent reviews? This place is a staple of Montgomery Village,an institution, and we MOCO-ites are so fortunate to have it with us. Everything is delicious, my personal favorite being the pork or chicken. Portions are super generous. I would add that I've heard complaints about too much dill on the fries but I've never experienced this and I'm sure they would be happy to cut back on it if you ask. This is "as good as it gets" for greek food at this price range.

  • Katie T.

Very flavorful food. I got the chicken souvlaki on pita and it was delicious. The sandwich was so unbelievably flavorful and moist. Perfectly cooked. The only problem was that there was not enough chicken for the size of the sandwich. Half of it was full of lettuce. But the taste made that part okay. It is also a little pricier than I had hoped. The baklava is absolutely delicious. Has lots of saucy goodness on it and it is flaky and wonderful. I will definitely go again but probably I will get a platter instead of the sandwich to get more meat. But it was a great lunch.

  • Doug H.

I can always count on Athens Grill for a great meal and prompt friendly service. They have wonderful dressing that goes perfectly with the feta cheese, salad and pita bread. The salmon, pork and chicken are always tender and nicely grilled. For a real treat the Zorba platter provides a delicious variety of flavors. The owner and staff are friendly and engaging which makes it fun to go there to eat in or take out. Being a neighborhood tradition you often run into other locals giving it a nice community feel.

Good food, freshly prepared. Lamb was tender and not dried out with good grilled flavor. Grilled vegetables were also very good.

Great Greek food. Very fast- we'll call in an order on our way home from work and it's ready and waiting when we pull up. The family that runs it is very friendly, and you can trust their recommendations if you're not sure what you want- they always suggest something great. I usually get a gyro platter, but everything we've sampled is delicious.

Outstanding Greek food! Athens Grill is probably the best restaurant in this part of Montgomery County--for real! Everything here is fresh, authentic, and delicious. The service is always friendly, and the food is consistently superb! The prices are very reasonable, and the Greek dishes are better than you get at many "sit-down" restaurants. The souvlaki sandwiches and platters are always a good bet, as is the gyro--but the entrees, particularly the lamb dishes, are also amazing. I think the tzatziki sauce is the best I've had, and the hummus is super. Also can't get enough of the Athens Grill's salad dressing/marinade. Love this place!

  • N B.

The gyro was pretty good. Not better then marathon deli in college park, but it was still tasty. The sandwich failed to have any feta cheese on it, which was a disappointment. The Tatziki sauce was good, and the meat was not that low-budget thin meat you get at some places. It was think and there was a decent amount. I also got the spinach pie and it was awful! The feta cheese in it was so hard, and it was soooo oily. I do not recommend the spinach pie but absolutely recommend the gyro.

Terrible. Salad was served with soggy lettuce and over ripped tomatoes. Complain to the owner and basically ignored my request. Poor business decision. Lost a customer over lettuce and tomatoes. Stay away.

Best Greek food I've ever had! I only wish I had more free time to stop by here often but all the times I've come to in the past, its always been a friendly and delicious experience. Chicken souvlaki platter is an epic meal. I assume this is what Zeus himself eats for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

  • Brian R.

Best Greek food around. Super flavorful, always juicy, and large portion sizes. Must eat.

  • Lauren H.

Most amazing little hole in the wall. Authentic Greek food. Best hummus I've ever had in my life, nothing like I've ever tasted before. I love their souvlaki and my husband can't get enough of the big fat gyro. The owner is impossibly nice. Don't forget dessert! Their baklava and peach melba puff are out of this world. This is one of my favorite places for take out.

I feel really lucky that I live less than five minutes away from here. I came here for the first time about four years ago after my mom told me that a lot of her coworkers frequented the place. I figured there must be something special about Athens Grill because the surrounding area is purely residential and there really isn't much that would attract non-MVers other than a handful of doctor offices and Lakeforest Mall about ten minutes away. I guess you could say that I came here with high expectations. Fortunately, this was one of the times where my expectations were met to the fullest and I left the restaurant completely in love with Greek food. Even after eating at many other establishments since then, I think that Athens Grill is still my go-to place for Greek food. I usually get the Big Fat Gyro, which can easily feed two people or one very hungry person. I will admit that I have finished one by myself before. I have no regrets though because it's worth every bite (and the stomach discomfort afterwards too). This place is perfect for a casual date with that special someone or even just yourself. Seriously, you could eat here alone and no one would judge you. Take out is also an option of course for shyer folks. They also have a fantastic website with their full menu and catering services listed.

I absolutely am in love with this place. The food is incredible and authentic. I came by here on a whim because it's near my new place. I ordered the chicken kabob. The chicken was moist and flavorful. The rice was delicious and the salad and dressing was incredible. Everything was perfect and I can't wait to go back!

  • Dixon M.

Athens Grill is fine. Not wonderful and not bad. The servings are generous, so you won't leave hungry. It looks clean, and the service is adequate, too. It is not worth a special trip, in my opinion, but if I'm in the neighborhood and craving a gyro, I'll stop there again.

  • Janet C.

Used to really enjoy going to Athens but our last experience was not stellar. Hermes wings appetizer for $5.99 was fried pita (not good) and 4 very small crusty wings that were tasty with the tzatziki but not worth the price. Kids chicken nuggets were overcooked and only comes with fries ($3 more if you want green beans). Rotisserie chicken tasted leftover from a day or more with a ton of dry spices throw on it and the plate. Gyro was just okay (hubby felt ill after eating). Greek salad was good but mostly lettuce. Complete bummer!

  • Morgan G.

I won't pretend to know authentic greek food, but if it's not this, I don't really care. The food is wonderful. I get the Chicken Souvlaki sandwich. It's seasoned so well and is so moist that you hardly even need any sauce. The portions are huge and the price is fair. The desserts aren't my favorite, but I've only tried a couple.

    (4)
  • Danette M.

First time coming! Boyfriend and I each ordered the gyro platter. Really wish someone had told us how big they were! We could have totally shared one. Delicious gyros! And I loved the fries. However I feel they are over priced considering they do absolutely no wait service of any sort. You even have to bring your dirty dishes up. At $12 a platter at least wipe down the tables...cause they were pretty dirty.

  • Jamie M.

My family and I tried this place on a Friday night for take out. When we first walked in the delicious smells, and the friendly atmosphere assured us that this was a winner. The nice gentleman behind the counter took our order and suggested some items too. With a order place for 3 gyro platters, some hermes wings, some chicken nuggets for the little ones, and 3 baklava and a peach melba, and some extra taziki sauce we waited for it all to be cooked and boxed. As we looked around, and talked to other patrons, everyone was raving about the food. Then we saw how huge the portions were for the price, and walked out of there with 2 bags full of food. As soon as we got it home and ate it, it was amazing. The food quality and taste reminded me of the Greek Diners we had in NJ where I grew up. My family gorged themselves not just for dinner, but Saturday Lunch too !!! This place is a winner and we will be back !!!!!

  • Chris M.

I go here a few times a year and I always have a phenomenal meal. Get the gyro, chicken souvlaki platter, or the big fat gyro( if your feeling extra hungry) and you will be a happy person. The roast chicken is very well seasoned and super tender also. Don't forget to get some of the rice pilaf, which is the tastiest and most buttery rice I have ever had. The people that run the place and good people that know how to cook good food.

I have been coming here for years, and HAVE TO come whenever I come home to visit. It's really only gotten better & better. Everything is terrific, but I have a hard time turning down an excellent Gyro.

Very happy with the food. I had Gyro plate and dries with feta. Decent price. Great taste and staff was polite. I highly recommend it.

I've been there a few times now and I must say the food is great. I've been getting the Gyro Platter and it's simply delicious. I want to try their other dishes but a good gyro is like kryptonite to me. Fast service, decent prices. You can sit and eat but the tables/chairs are a bit small and beat up. Seems most people get their food to go but you'll find the atmosphere fine if you want to sit and chow down. It's inside a stripmall and it's not very large.

This place has the best Greek food in Montgomery County...HANDS DOWN!!

  • Jeff B.

I am a huge fan of Athens Grill. This place is less than a mile from my crib, and I take full advantage. I usually order the half rotisserie chicken with some rice pilaf and pita bread. Whatever chicken seasoning they use is fantastic! However, sometimes the chicken comes out too dry. Nonetheless, the baklava makes up for this fact. I have never eaten in here unless I was waiting for my pictures to finish developing at CVS. I recommend carryout. I have been coming to Athens Grill since I was 5. They opened up in 1989. I was born in 1990. I hope we live a long, prosperous life together. I do

  • Lou L.

We have been coming here for 20+ years, even though we don't live close by any longer. We always order the same things: tarama and gyro. Don't get the gyros with french fries, just a regular gyro sandwich. Among the best ever. Greek salad is good too,

  • Mariella B.

Mhh it's okay I don't think it left an impression on me where I'll crave for it unless I'm in the area. I should also say I am not a huge Greek, Mediterranean, or Middle Easter connoisseur but I do enjoy this style of food so my review may not be the best. Went here one time because my sister and I were starving, looked on Yelp to see what was in the MV area. It's located in that small shopping center in MV where the McDonald's and CVS is. The restaurant is a small sit down spot with a very large menu. I got the Gyro with fries and pita bread and my sister got the same but sandwich. The portions are more than generous, my sister and I should have just split a platter. The service is decent didn't leave an impression but also wasn't terrible that I had to vent in my review. I would do back and I would recommend this spot if you're in the MV area but I feel I could get the same taste at Caspian or Moby Dick's. I know for my sister it left a big impression and has asked me to go back...I'm sure she has gone back sans me.

Just moved to the area and jumped on Yelp to find some good local eats. This place came up on the top of the list and I can see why. Food: I'm a big fan of greek food (I'll put feta or tzatziki on literally anything) and this place delivers on all fronts. I had the chicken souvlaki platter the first time I went here. I got a skewer of chicken breast with greek seasoning, some pita and a mountain of greek salad (opted for double salad in lieu of the fries). Chicken was moist and flavorful and the greek salad got the job done. The 2nd time I went here I had the Gyro sandwich. The meat was tender and delicious and the tzatziki sauce was bright and tasty. Both times, the portions were pretty big and definitely filling. Ambiance: Probably not so applicable a word in this case. The place consists of a storefront, a counter, a few tables and some greek music on the stereo. It's got a little no bs kinda charm and the people there are friendly. Also does takeout, which is convenient. Value: Cheap cheap cheap and a lot of food. Overall: This will be a go to for years to come.

I have been going to Athens Grill for over 10 years. It is consistent and delicious. They provide large portions of delicious food that you just cannot get in any place other than a small mom and pop operation. Everything is made fresh and you can taste it. The decor and interior is a bit dated, but dont let that affect your willingness to give it a try. You will not regret it!

    (5)
  • Aaron C.

This place is awesome. The pita bread and the rice are some of the best I've ever had. The rotisserie chicken was very tasty as well. The lamb chops were good, though a little slightly a little too well done for my taste. I forgot to ask if I could get it medium rare (like I normally like my lamb chops). The portions were huge, and I eat A LOT. Even I went home full. Overall, I loved it. The only bad part is that I am visiting from out of town and probably won't be able to come back here again.

  • Alan J.

I live right next to this place and just had it for the first time. It was very tasty and the owners are very friendly. The prices are good for the amount of food you get. I will definitely go back and try something new.

  • Lynn F.

We've been here three or four times. The food -- especially the daily specials -- is great and you have to carefully look around to see all the offerings since they're written in a few places usually. But the quality is great, and the prices just right. The portions are huge. It's a good value. Don't come expecting ambience, it's pretty basic. It's all about the food.

  • Caroline B.

This place is amazeballs. I came here with friends who swear by it and was blown away. The fries are sooooooo good. The only problem with this place is that it's hot inside but the food makes up for a lil bit of sweat.

  • Michael F.

Great hole-in-the-wall which you can definitely tell from the outside (or inside with the old and stale decor). The quality of the food is unbelievable for a place like this. Also, the owner and his employee were very nice and accommodating when we ordered. I ordered the lamb kabob (18ish bucks) as well as the hummus. People are right in their reviews, the portions are huge with a heap of savory couscous, a large skewer of juicy meat, and a large salad in Italian-like dressing. Unfortunately they only give you small slices (4) of pita bread, which is nevertheless good as well. As for the hummus, it is unbelievably good, where you can taste the freshness and quality of the ingredients used. Like the lamb kabob I ordered, the hummus came with 10 slices of pita bread (why can't there be more? please?) but it still did the trick. Overall, great quality and portions of food. Price is so-so, because it cost about 25 bucks, which I think should have cost $15. If it did cost 15, I would give it 6 stars.

An old guy I met at work once told me that some place got the gyro right and some place don't. We were in some Greek restaurant nears work at that time. Athens Grill's gyro is the perfect example of how it should be done right. It is so good that I can't even tried other items in the menu every time I went there. So, if you don't know what to get in the first place, get gyro platter or sandwich with pita. For the dessert, I recommend "YALAKTOBUREKO", it is very light and delicious dessert. Rosary chicken is OK and drier than Peruvian chicken. Mutton and chicken Kabobs are nothing to write home about. But their Gyro platter with Greek salad and fries is a total kill. Servings are very generous and fresh. I find it very healthy and filling.

Both me and my brother were craving for a good gyro / souvlaki type of sandwich. Did research on yelp and decided to try this place out based on all the good reviews. This restaurant is in a strip mall in a neighborhood that I have never been to. I guess that's still considered Montgomery Village? Anyhow, we went on a Saturday night and the restaurant was pretty empty. I got a pork souvlaki sandwich and my brother got a gyro sandwich. One main reason why we both got the sandwich instead of the patter is because we like to eat that thing like a sandwich. But those sandwiches come in pretty good size that it was impossible to hold it together and bite it like a sandwich. We ended up eating those things with fork and knife. Anyhow, the pork souvlaki I got was good. they used pork tenderloin and it was really tender, and they seasoned it pretty well (although it was a bit on the salty side). The bread, lettuce, and cheese all seemed fresh. My brother liked his gyro also. But he said it wasn't anything special. So we both agree that this place makes good sandwiches, although nothing too special. and we probably wouldn't go all the way into that neighborhood just for that.

Best Greek food around this area that I've had. love how it's not to far away form me a little bit expensive but worth the price. if you live around the gaithersburg area give this place a try you will love it.

I was craving a gyro and fries from Marathon Deli in College Park, but since I live an hour away, I wasn't willing to drive there to eat. After reading the other reviews, I decided to give this place a try. I was hooked after the first bite. The gyro meat was really flavorful and tender and the tzatziki sauce was delicious as well. It was definitely one of the best gyro I've had! The fries weren't as good as Marathon since they put their special seasoning mix on it, but they were crisp and hot. I can't complain. The restaurant is on the small side but has a good amount of seating. It was really busy when we went on a Friday night around 6 and every table was taken with a continuous line of people ordering. The prices were a bit higher than what I'm used to, but it was SO worth it! This is my new go to gyro place.

From the reviews, I had a different image in mind, so when I arrived at Athens Grill, I was slightly disappointed. However, you can never judge a book by its cover... right? Or at least, you're not supposed to. I had to order the Gyro Platter since SO many reviewers recommended it. I haven't had a lot of Greek food in my lifetime so far, but I thought the food was pretty decent. Fries were nothing special, but they were cooked just the way I like them, so they were special to me. I also got one of their desserts, which was pretty tasty. It was flaky pastry with custard, peach, and raspberries inside with the scent of rosewater. Strange, but interestingly good. The biggest gripe that I had was the lack of air conditioning in the restaurant. If you have that big of an oven, and you're constantly cooking meat, then shouldn't you invest in some ways to keep your customers cool? No matter. I guess it's all part of the experience. This isn't a place you'd bring your first date to, but it's definitely a place you'd go for a satisfying, quick lunch. Cheap and yummy, I'll go again if I'm in the neighborhood.

Family-owned restaurant, tucked away in residential Gaithersburg, MD in a strip mall. The owner, Dimitri, seems to always be there. The restaurant is open six days a week and never disappoints. Dimitri has trained the cooks well. The place is nothing special in terms of the ambiance, though I love Greek music and it is always playing! During the warm days, you can eat outside on some cast-iron chairs and tables. Inside, there about fifteen tables that seat 2-4 people. After many meals at the place, I would say about 75-80% of the business is takeout. I have done both and the portions are about the same in each (BIG and YUMMY!). If eating in, you place your order, pay, leave a tip for the cooks, sit down, smell the aroma of the wood-burning brick oven cooking your food, and wait for your delicious meal. The cooks will call your receipt number to go up to pick up your food, unless you are a regular, then they will just give you the nod (NO wait staff). If you are local and want to do takeout, I strongly suggest calling ahead, unless you want to watch the cooks do their magic on your meal. The rest of the strip mall has a CVS Pharmacy, dry cleaners (good), and a beer distributor (limited selection), if you want to run some quick errands while waiting on your takeout. If eating in, you bus your own table clean when done eating. Many Greek standards are cooked at Athens including Gyros, Souvlaki, Moussaka, and Kabobs, as well as several other nice dishes. Of course, chicken and lamb are featured, but the chefs do a very nice job on fish dishes as well. Most dishes are served with either rice or french fries, grilled pita bread, and Greek salad. I would say the only disappointment I have had is that Greek potatoes are not available as a side dish selection, especially with the lamb dishes. The price of most meals range from $8 to $20. The portions are very large! Free refills on drinks (ONLY nonalcoholic products). And let me say that the Greek desserts, many homemade, are wonderful too! I would love it if Dimitri got a liquor license and served Greek wine and beer, but again with 75-80% of the business as takeout, I don't blame him. I eat at Athens about twice a month, if not more, and have never been disappointed. I wish the restaurant had a little bit more ambiance, served Greek potatoes as a side, and offered alcoholic beverages, but Dimitri is a smart guy and I am sure he has probably tried these things in the past and now lives with a great takeout business and a small in-house serving.

Finally a restaurant in Rockville/Gaithersburg that delivers good, fresh, well seasoned food at good value prices. Expectations were met after so many local disappointments. A lot to be said of a family owned place that doesn't try to be pretentious. Had Zorba platter, chix wing app and grilled shrimp. Platter enough for 2 ppl. easily. Meat, chicken, shrimp cooked right. Tzatziki sauce very good; nice thick texture with herbs; maybe had some sour cream added to it in addition to the Greek yougurt?

I'll have to agree with the other 5 star reviews -- this place is excellent. I got the gyro platter: gyro meat with tzatziki sauce served on top of a greek salad with fries and pita bread. It really is a hole in the wall. I learned about it from Yelp and found it with a GPS. Otherwise I would have never known it was there. There are only maybe...10? tables in the place. The restaurant itself is small and simple but clean and functional. It does booming business (there was a line out the door almost the whole time we were there) but it looks like 95% of the customers are picking up take-out orders so we didn't have any trouble finding a table on a Friday night around 6pm. If you're looking for Greek around Germantown/Montgomery Village, this looks like the place to go.

A really excellent "cheap eat" spot for a crazy portion of food. Got the Gyro Platter this time and this lovely plate was stacked with meat, salad, cheese, fries, topped off with a very good tzatziki sauce. Highly recommend this dish. Last time I was there, I got some kabob (can't remember which meat) and it was decent, not the greatest I've had. Our most recent visit, ordered the chicken kabob and it was over seasoned with salt. If the salt was cut back a bit, the chicken would be flavored pretty well with all the other spices going on. One gripe would be the seating here, as the first time we went, it was packed and seating was tight. Had to wait for folks to leave. This place is tucked away in the Montgomery Village area, so if you have a GPS, it'd be helpful. Again, get the Gyro Platter if you're a fan, you will definitely think about a second visit.

The food here is so delicious...word's can not describe. My girlfriend, who doesn't like onions, or tomatoes, readily devoured them from the gyro platter. I don't know what they put in their sauces, but it's really good! The portions here are gigantic. If you're ordering a platter, and it seems expensive, it's because it can easily feed two average sized adults!

I really miss the Athens Grill. The peasant salad is so good, along with every other food item I tried. The owners are so friendly and welcoming and like to remember what your order is. Hope to visit again soon.

Oh how I miss getting takeout on a regular basis from Athens Grill. I started going there back in 1990 when they first opened and I had just moved to Mont. Village, and the place still looks basically the same. In fact, with the exception of the huge roasting pit or whatever you call the thing they put the chickens in, it still looks like the previous occupant which was a frozen yogurt store! Remember how popular those places were in the eighties? Anyway, that's the reason for the pinkish hue in the floor tiles, etc. Athens Grill is certainly not about ambiance. Don't get me wrong, it's very clean and you'll never have to worry about anything crawling around as you eat. It's just small and dated, and is therefore best for carryout, which I did on about a monthly basis for 18 years. The only sad thing about moving away from Montgomery Village (believe me...I couldn't wait to get out of that hell hole) was leaving this gem behind. Back in the day, Taki (I hope this is how he spells his name), his wife and their 2 daughters did everything themselves; the cooking, the register, answering the phone, bussing tables...you get the idea. Well, the girls grew up, there's now non-familial help and it seems that Taki is the sole family member left there. He himself was gone for a while a few years ago and his wife (why can't I remember her name? I sure remember her slightly raspy voice and her eyeliner!) ran the place alone. Now the tables are turned and I haven't seen her in a long time. In any event, no matter who runs Athens Grill, they do a phenominal job! So how about the food? Well, I ALWAYS ordered the same exact thing. Chicken Souvlaki Platter with their delicious home-made salad dressing on the side. The dressing is sooooo good that they bottle and sell it! The chicken was always spiced and cooked to perfection, the salad very generous, the fries crispy, and the pita wonderful thanks to being warmed up over the open fire. All this for about $10 - $11 (I remember when it cost about $6 but that was loooong ago). From time to time I'd branch out and order something from their usually extensive list of specials which are uniformly wonderful, but I'd always return to my Chicken Souvlaki Platter the next time I called my order in. It became so routine that I'd call up, Taki would answer "Athens Grill, how may I help you?" and I'd say "Hi, it's Adam" and he'd say "Your Chicken Souvlaki Platter will be ready in 15 minutes." It's about 25 minutes from my new place to AG. Unfortunately, I haven't been back to AG except to say hi to Taki around Christmas time. Resolution to self...get my a$$ over there soon and enjoy a CSP!

So I took some of my co-workers here today and they enjoyed it too. I asked the owner if I can have some lettuce in my Big Fat Gyro and he said that it would take away from the dish, as in, it wouldn't be the same. It wasn't that they didn't have lettuce or that it wouldn't fit in it, he just thought that would destroy the dish that he created. I can respect that, however its my dish and I think he should have simply said I don't recommend it but if you want it... I still like this place very much. I would give it 4.5 stars on my second visit, but since I can't and this place is definitely a mom and pop shop, ill round it up!

Athens Grill is spot I regularly rely on for a good meal. Nothing extraordinary here, but sometimes consistently delivering good, authentic food is a good enough reason for me to keep coming back. Meat is what you want to get at AG. Lamb, pork, rotisserie chicken (my favorite), doesn't matter, just pick one. AG consistently delivers meats with good flavors from their seasoning and cooking technique (char grilling or open flame rotisserie). Of course the gyro is the most popular, which I enjoy, but there are a few good gyros around Gaithersburg. The one thing I don't like about the place is they don't have a liquor license. Dimitry (owner) also offers authentic Greek dishes that are always fresh and rewarding when I am feeling adventurous. One was a lamb shank in a delicious and unique sweet tomato based sauce (never tasted anything like that sauce before). Him and his wife are from Greece which adds a sense of authenticity to the place. And their love for good food comes out in ever meal served.

By far the BEST Greek restaurant I'm ever eaten. The servings are gigantic. This rice is very garlicky, which I love! The gyros are spectacular. The people are friendly. I will be back again and again.

If you're looking for authentic, fresh, and delicious Greek food, this is THE place to go! My fiance and I try to stop by the Athens Grill at least once a week, and there is good reason--we've never, ever had a bad meal here. Dimitri and the rest of the staff are always very friendly, courteous, and you can certainly tell that they are dedicated to their work. My absolute favorite is the spanakopita, or spinach pie, a scrumptious creation of spinach and feta cheese wrapped in crisp, golden layers of phyllo and baked in the oven. I'd also recommend the village salad, which is comprised of always-fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and onions with just enough olive oil and feta to top it off. Their pita bread, cooked up nice and hot on the grill, is just heavenly. Try it with the taramosalta, a satisfying red caviar dip, or the dill-infused tzatziki sauce. But with all the choices--souvlaki, gyros, zucchini sticks, baklava, etc.--you just can't go wrong. Athens Grill also exceeds my expectations for cleanliness and sanitation, which is very important to me. The tables and floors are kept clean and free of garbage or leftover food and the restrooms are in tip-top shape. To me, these are signs that the Athens Grill is serious about providing customers with top-notch service. Definitely recommended!

Great food, low prices, and a helpful owner. The hummus was great. My parents enjoyed the gyro sandwich and chicken kabob salad. Even the fries are good and crispy.

So awesome and so good. The portions here are HUGE. I ordered the Pork Souvlaki platter and I had enough for two meals. I remember when this place first opened and I've always loved coming back home and grabbing a bite here. Fantastic food that is always fresh. I also like sitting out on the patio and people watching.

Branched out away from the gyro and tried the Athenian Chicken...loved it! Fried Zucchini is also money! Bummer that they are closed on Sunday's! Still the local staple for Greek!

Weak. Went on a Friday night and got the Ouzo meatballs. Rice and grease were more descriptive of the dish. Next came the chicken souvlaki. Meh is about the best description for this. Uninspired and overrated. Decor is 100% kitsch. Yahoo and yelp both have rave reviews which were what inpsired me to try it. Cava is 50 times the restaurant this is.

I love this place. I have been going for years. I love the friendly family that owns this place. The dad is always there being the gracioushost and order taker. I pretty much only get the gyro platter. As previous reviewers have said, huge portion with great peasant salad and fries that i drench in the slad dressing oil and dip in the tzatziki sauce. Very good and very filling meal well worth the price. I have also had the chicken slavoki(sorry for the spelling) that is very good as well a very well seasoned and not dry pieces of chicken. The baklava and peach melba are homemade and delisious. You cannot get any better than a real family owned good restaurant. Please support this family owned business we need places like this to stick around. (I swear i have no relation to the family or restaurant) I just want tham to keep getting good business because they deserve it.

I've been going to Athens Grill since it opened 18 years ago, and it has some of the best Greek food around. It's hard for me to pick a favorite, but the spanikopita and tiropita are the best I've tasted outside of Greece (and even then, I think I like the pitas at Athens Grill better). My parents had a party, and they got a few of the whole chickens to serve. My mother-in-law couldn't stop raving about how good the chicken was.

I went to this place when it first opened about 17 years ago. They are hidden gem in suburban hell, i am almost a little ashamed to tell you all about this place. It is quaint, and small, with a few tables and are closed on Sunday's. They have some of the best and most authentic Greek food in MoCo. The two owners are directly from Greece and everything they make is homemade and from scratch. Washingtonian Magazine did an article on them back in May 2007, saying how great their food was and their tzatziki sauce is the best. Their Souvlaki's, kabobs, and Gyro are the best, lots of meat and sauce, excellent wood grilled pita bread. Watch out for the Big Fat Gyro, it means business (you have been warned). They also have had to find dishes that are very authentic like Orzo with lamb stew and meatballs made with vegetables. Oh, did i mentions baklava to die for; and whole fire roasted chickens over a hardwood charcoal spit. You should go, no, seriously, you should go now... bye, bye, enjoy (but make sure you bring a mint, you will need it)

My family gets takeout from here every now and then. The gyros and Chicken slouvakis are really good. Great fries. There are a bunch of regulars who seem to like eating in; while the staff is very friendly, I have never had the desire to dine inside the restaurant. I always pick up and eat back at the house. The decor could use some sprucing up. The portions are very generous.

This is my favorite restaurant, bar none. If I were asked where I'd like to have my last meal, it would be Athens Grill. We have been going there since it opened 15 or 20 years ago. We've moved five times since we first went there and on trips back to the area, even after we moved to Iowa and later to Southern California, we've made it a point to go there whenever possible on trips to the East Coast. Everything we've ever had there has been absolutely delicious. My husband usually orders the gyro platter and I order the peasant salad and chicken souvlaki sandwich (with pita bread). Their Greek dressing is superb and can be purchased online. Dimitri, his wife and two daughters have always been so hospitable and have remembered us even when we've been away for several years. Their food is first-rate and I would give it even more stars if I could!

Athens Grill is a mom and pop place with the best Greek food I have honestly ever had! Everything is made from scratch. I go there about twice a month. The owners know me when I call to place my order which is cool! I typically get their Brest of Chicken platter or their Gyro platter. Their chicken and gyros are awesome! Price is good for the value of food that you get. It is a small place so I would recommend getting carry out over dining there. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves greek food, or just would like something a little more on the healthy side.

Well I hate to write negative reviews about "moms and pops" restaurant but I will express what I experienced. I read lot of reviews here and how Athens is so authentic and the good stuff so I decided to stop by for a Gyro Sandwich. Price was OK but the sandwich was horrible. It was in no way or shapes a sandwich. Lots of lattice with lots of cucumber sauce and two slices of meet flat on a plat so you cannot eat like a sandwich since it was extremely messy. I've had these sorts of Gyros sandwiches at fast food franchises where they buy pita bread and gyro meet from Kronos which is a major supplier of restaurant food in US. So I was disappointed by the food and the presentation. Nothing "mom and pop" about this restaurant since I could get same crap from a bigger food chain at cheaper price. I've had Authentic Gyro Sandwich which is supposed to be wrapped in a "home cooked pita bread" and the "gyro meat" is cooking in front of you on a vertical skewer where the cook cuts the meat in front of you or at least when you order it unlike this joint where meat was frozen for who knows how long.
